This place used to be called Squizzy Taylors –aka scally–central. And it's owned by the same folk who gave us the inexcusably bad Idols across the road. So it's got to come as a surprise that they've done a respectable job on Bar Code; out went the tools and spanners, in came a stock of comfy, classy leather sofas and modern art. Refreshingly, they charge a mere £1.70 a pint, making it one of the better–value joints in the Northern Quarter. Taking it on face value, you might just grow to love this hidden gem. Also, watch out for the three kitchen hands chain–smoking at the end of the bar, passing comment on everyone.
