The Black Gardenia
This cramped but decidedly decadent basement club evokes a 1940s revival; complete with waxed moustaches, berets, pre-war stockings and an atmosphere hanging heavy with vintage cologne. The retro-clad crowd gathers en masse for nightly cabaret, which ranges from live jazz and blues (we loved the old-style mic) through to voodoo and burlesque. Our queens of tease looked rather sour but somehow that only added to the feeling that we were in a bygone sweet-yet-sad age.
