Tabernacle
The warren of narrow streets surrounding Old Street station isn't the sort of area you might imagine coming across a venue of real definition. Whether you agree or not, the gentrification of Shoreditch has allowed for a wave of mediocre eateries, peddling the same dull menus and hiding behind their fashionable locations. Not so with Tabernacle Bar and Grill – this restaurant really is of another class entirely. A quick glance over the menu (which is updated regularly) shows a selection of modern European dishes, which ooze elaborateness and sophistication – but with that vital addition of understatement. Oh, and they taste rather stonking too. This is reinforced by the staff – at once, professional and natural – something that really can't be taken for granted these days. In a place that has every right to get on its highest horse, you can take real comfort as you relax in the most warm and unobtrusive of atmospheres. Add to this an enviable wine-list and the most divine cheese-board you'll have for a long time and it would appear that you're on to a real winner. PD
