Fortnum & Mason
Throw Harrods to the tourists. For three centuries Fortnum's has kept the upper-crust fed and watered and kept the riffraff out. But now we're harder to spot, and this four-storey temple to indulgence is looking lovely. Plush carpets, chandeliers, vast jars of sugared almonds, mirrored perfume counters – this is film-set grandeur. The prettiest bit is the 1950s-style ice-cream parlour, where a Knickerbocker Glory costs £9. With prices as jaw-dropping as the décor, Fortnum's brings out the wide-eyed Dickensian urchin in us all.
