Beckford's Tower
Designed to kill off any asthmatic old women in your party – if the walk up Lansdown Hill doesn't leave them gasping for breath then the climb to the top of the 154-foot tower certainly will. Don't let that stop you though – it's worth the trek as the views from the top are incredible. Built for William Beckford in 1827 as a library for his collection of rare books and somewhere to entertain his mates. Nowadays, the stairways are littered with blue-lipped old ladies who are seriously considering changing their will.
