Cottaging in Brighton

Jason Rosam from Gaydar Radio gives you the lowdown on cottaging in Brighton

Bath gaydar radio gay cottaging toilet what's on where to drinking eating bar pub restaurant night clubLike a quick thrill, and a sense of danger? How about the pure filth of playing with a complete stranger? Then you might be tempted into a public lav to try out some cottaging.

Men have been enjoying a quick fumble in the gents for hundreds of years but cottaging has supposedly been declining rapidly as the disappearance of the traditional public toilet takes its toll.

However the pastime is gaining a resurgence as loads of young gay boys, bi lads and curious, horny straight men are suddenly getting into cottaging for all kinds of reasons. They may love the thrill of touching up a stranger, having no strings sex, or just checking out a bit of cock.

In most smelly old gaffs you will still find the old men who wouldn’t get a look in on the gay scene but the rise of the gay chav/scally culture might be fueling an interest in cottaging as it's seen as dirty and 'sumfin u cud get n asbo 4 innit.'

Some chav nights at gay night clubs (Dress Code: trackie bottoms, trainers, baseball caps and large gold chains) set up areas that simulate the cottaging experience in locked cubicles but it's not the same as the real dirty deal, there’s nothing better than that distinctive smell of stale piss (hey,  it's a turn on for many).

Not sure how to go about getting into cottaging? Well, if you're in a cottage and someone's standing at the urinal wanking, it’s a good start.

Others lock themselves in cubicles and peek under the door to see who comes past, if they like you they'll open up and beckon you in.

Lock yourself in a free cubicle and you may notice that others who have been before have conveniently drilled a hole through the wall. Yes, it's the famous glory hole, and depending on size you can use it to just have a peek next door or stick your knob through and see what happens!

Visiting a cottage is a weird, surreal atmosphere where no one speaks and everything is done with glances and moves similar to the experience of a gay sauna, but it's free.

Just like cruising it can be dangerous but the Police have a lot more to worry about than guys getting their rocks off at the urinal.

In the past the police tried to discourage the activity with officers posing as gay men known as 'pretty policeman' but today there is a general consensus among most authorities to turn a blind eye.

With more and more gay venues than ever, a liberal outlook to gay life and the success of Gaydar, do we really need to use the local bogs for some dirty action? The answer is no, but for many it's a horny cheap fetish and its as easy as spending a penny!

Jason Rosam hosts the Gaydar Radio breakfast show, between 7 and 11am.

If you want to go cottaging in Brighton, check out the Ditchling Common. Follow the path to the bushes on the right hand side of the field in front of the car park right to the secluded undergrowth.

I live near Fleet Lane. I am gay but find what's happening very seedy. It is a place of natural beauty where people like to go in families and enjoy walking their dogs. Strange men appear from nowhere and loiter. Litter is strewn everywhere. I think these things should be done in more private places. Not in the beauty spots of Oulton.
