Brighton stage scene
Theatre Royal Brighton
New Road (01273) 328488
Nearly 200 years old, steeped in history and rumoured to be haunted by a resident ghost. We like to whisper this news in a sinister tone to any children we encounter on our visit. Aside from the comedy value of making innocents cry this is the place to come for big shows and plays.
The Dome/Corn Exchange/Pavilion Theatre
New Road (01273) 709709
Originally built as stables for the Prince of Wales in 1805, The Dome was converted into a concert hall in 1867 and modernised in 1935. Why you’d need to know all of that we’re not quite sure. Let’s face it, we’re just showing off. Come to this three-venues-in-one venue for dance, music and comedy events. Great stuff.
Brighton Little Theatre
9 Clarence Gardens (01273) 814 666
Tiny in name only, this amateur theatre company puts on between 10 and 12 impressive shows a year. Fiercely independent and brimming with talent, we like this place, a lot.
Gardner Arts Centre
University of Sussex Campus, Lewes Road (01273) 685861
Sussex University's very own contemporary arts venue. Opened in 1969, it was the first campus arts centre in the UK and stages nationally renowned productions, from big name comedy acts to cutting edge theatre and contemporary dance.
Komedia
Gardner Street (01273) 647100
Comedy, cabaret, theatre and live music. It’s well worth getting all cultural with this lot – the members’ bar opens till 1am.
Marlborough Theatre
4 Princes Street (01273) 570028
Massively popular little theatre conveniently situated above a pub. Quality.
