ultimate fighting championship ufc 89 fighting kicking birmingham nia national indoor arena 18 october

The spectacle of men fighting each other has been around for quite a long time. Roman gladiatorial contests always used to draw a crowd, and millions of people now frequently tune in to watch two boxers beat each other up. But Itchy can't help feeling that modern boxing is a bit, well, tame. Step forward Ultimate Fighting Championship...

The UFC is basically WWF for adults (and not only because it doesn't share its acronym with a wildlife organisation). Two men enter a cage, promise not to blind, maim or kill each other, and then they beat the seven shades of shit out of each other. It takes fighting back to the dark ages – and audiences love it.

So why is Itchy so interested in this legalised barbarianism? Because, lucky Brummies, Birmingham is going to play host to UFC 89 on Saturday, 18 October. The main event at the NIA will see Britain's Michael Bispen taking on USA's Chris Leben. 10 other bouts complete the line up, assuring a whole evening of sweat, blood and (probably not) tears.

UFC doesn't come across the Atlantic very often, so this legalised, effectively rule-less violence is not to be missed.
