New to Manchester
Moving to Manchester can be daunting. With everything from plotting your escape from aggressive people thrusting flyers in your face round the Uni, to negotiating your way through hoards of mangy pigeons at Piccadilly Gardens. But with Itchy's Newbies' Guide to Manchester, you can be sure to get the most out of your move to good old Madchester.
Now, Itchy wouldn't want to bad-mouth Tesco (after all, their spies might hear us) but the retail giant isn't exactly making your weekly food shop cheap. Withington Fruit and Veg is a lovely market-style shop selling amazingly cheap, good-quality produce.
Sure, it's tempting to spend your hard-earned (or hard-loaned) cash in greedy high street chains, but check out Ryan Vintage. Unlike many cheekily over-priced vintage shops, this place seems oblivious to the ongoing vintage craze and has masses of unique pieces for very reasonable prices.
Manchester is renowned (notorious?) for its fantastic clubs, but with fresher mania in full swing, you might want to avoid nights with names like 'I Love Sex' (we didn't make this one up). Try Mr. Scruff at Music Box, a night on the chilled side featuring a very successful local DJ. There's even tea and apples at the back.
Itchy met Mr Scruff once. Check out what he had to say here.
Clique at Mint Lounge is one of the trendiest nights in the city at the minute; expect indie-chic tunes and retro outfits.
If the thought of visiting another sticky Wetherspoons makes you shudder, hunt down Corbieres, a vibrant underground bar that you'd never find without a wise old friend to drag you there... or an Itchy guide.
Common, a hyper trendy graffiti-covered bar is so cool you can barely see its tiny sign above the doorway.
In the spirit of avoiding mass-produced chain food, visit Croma, a restaurant offering weird and wonderful variations on the common pizza.
The folks are bound to visit you sometime to check if you're still alive, so take them to Panama Hatty's, which has the double bonus of serving gorgeous fusion food while being fairly pricey (they're paying).
Want to escape Manc when you've just arrived? Take a short bus journey to the Trafford Centre, a huge shopping centre with a mega food hall.
Heaton Park is the massive park just a short tram journey away which has loads of country-friendly activities, including horse-riding and golf.
