October events in Manchester

Ah, October. The nights are drawing in, the leaves are beginning to fall, and, admit it or not, everyone is secretly plotting their Halloween costume. (It simply must be better than last year's). Luckily for Mancunians, October doesn't mean sitting in every night watching reruns on E4 and worrying about energy bills.

This month plays showcase to Noise Festival, an online celebration of all things artsy. Noise is the UK's first virtual talent festival, where under-25s from across the country submit a wide range of work, including art, fashion, design, photography and music. This year's submissions will be judged by Badly Drawn Boy, architect Zaha Hadid, and photographer Richard Billingham, among others.

Funny man Russell Howard, who we know and love from such comedy classics as Mock the Week, will be performing his show Dingledodies at the Opera House this month. This one will book up fast, so get on it.

Manchester is doing its fair share of green campaigning this month with Heaton Park's Tree-Athlon. This sporty environmentally friendly shindig involves a 5km run, planting a tree, and declaring your ”tree wish“ to the world. If you're feeling a tad lazy, there are all sorts of tree-related goings-on at the Tree Party throughout the day, including tree climbers, a Hedgehog Rescue team and woodland creature hat-making! You'd have to go for the novelty alone.

Masaki Fujihata's the Conquest of Imperfection exhibition displays eight interactive installations which use new technology as parodies of how we learn and communicate.

Sure, everyone would rather stay at home gleefully carving pumpkins and playing with sparklers, but you're not five anymore so you should probably make a Halloween appearance on the town. The Friday Night Experience at Tiger Tiger will be the perfect place to show off your costume, while busting out some scary dance moves to XFM Manchester DJ Gareth Brooks.
