Time to lace up those ice skates

If you're going to look clumsy on the ice this winter, why not make up for your wobbly legwork by skating in stylish settings. From the end of November until early January, London offers unique backdrops for the courageous to brave the ice. Bundle up, bring a mate with a camera, and as long as you can stay up off your ass for a few seconds, you'll get some Kodak moments.

Tower of London
November 22–January 11
Skate on the ice-covered moat beneath the Tower, next to the banks of the Thames. The venue's Moat Café lets chilly and ice-bruised skaters heal with seasonal winter warmers.

Kew Gardens
November 29–January 4
Twirl around on the ice in the heart of the Royal Botanical Gardens, illuminated by the lights of the Temperate House. Take a break from skating to wander the gardens or visit the Xstrata Treetop Walkway to get stunning views of the city.

Hampton Court
November 29–January 11
Step back in time at the Hampton Court ice rink. The venue will be decorated with authentic historic Tudor decorations, host traditional costumed events and offer Tudor cookery in the palace kitchen.

Hampton Court ice rink

Natural History Museum
November 6–January 18
Accomplished skaters can show off their talents at this ice rink in the middle of the city. Not only will those driving by notice fancy footwork, but so will those with a bird's eye view of the rink from the Café Bar.

Hyde Park
22 November–January 4
If Christmas is your favourite holiday and you want to go all out, head to Hyde Park for a Christmas extravaganza. Besides a large outdoor ice rink, Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland will feature an observation wheel, bungee dome, fair rides and of course Father Christmas. Though you might be getting a little old to sit on his lap.

Canary Wharf
November 22–February 22
Skate surrounded by twinkling lights. Beneath the skyscrapers in Canada Square Park, you'll feel like you've been transported to New York's building-lined Rockefeller Centre.

Somerset House
November 19–January 25
Glide beneath the Tiffany's Christmas tree and boogie to the best of your ability in ice skates during the historic Somerset House's late skates and DJ nights.
